A cat in the house almost certainly means a litter box. But did you know that the choice of cat litter has an impact on the environment? With more than 3 million cats in the Netherlands and an average of 50-100 kg of cat litter per year per cat, it is important to be aware of the environmental impact.

Tips for sustainable use of cat litter

  1. Regular cleaning: Regular removal of faeces reduces the need to change cat litter often and reduces odour nuisance.

  2. Choose renewable raw materials: Use cat litter made from materials such as wood chips, corn stalks or wheat stalks. These are more sustainable than mineral fillings.

  3. Proper disposal: Used cat litter belongs in residual waste, not in kitchen and garden waste. This applies even to fillings made from renewable resources because of possible harmful substances.

  4. Avoid composting: Cat litter may contain printing ink or harmful substances that are not suitable for composting. So do not throw it on the compost heap.

  5. Avoid flushing: Never flush cat litter down the toilet to avoid blockages.

  6. Use clumping cat litter: it makes cleaning up easier. You simply scoop out the dried-out faeces. If the non-clumping fillings are saturated, the litter box should be changed in its entirety.

Choose wisely and contribute to a greener world, even when changing the litter box. For more tips, visit waardlanden.nl/tips
